Bored at work… Don’t Let Twitter or Facebook know!

If you have been addicted to the Status updates on various Social Networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Orkut etc. – Beware! Employers are snooping and you could get fired because of “your Status updates”!

Here’s what happened to a British teen

That’s what happened to Briton teen, Kimberly Swann. She was summarily sacked after her boss learned — via her updated status — that she was “bored at work.” In this hilarious CNN segment, a journalist does a search for the terms “bored” and “work” on Facebook and Twitter, and finds that Swann certainly isn’t alone. (Further research would no doubt dig up folks saying far worse things about their place of employment).

Her boss, meanwhile, says Swann’s admission of boredom revealed that “she just wasn’t happy here” and thus “it wasn’t going to work out.” We’re no experts, but why was the boss perusing Facebook on company time? Was he, perhaps, a little bored?

The economy is at an all time low and companies would have to cut down costs to survive and to ensure that the financial losses are cut down. Here are some signs that will help you evaluate if you are in the hit list or not. If yes, I suggest you start working on your resume right away.

Have you been asked to take an unpaid vacation?
Has your boss been fired ?
If your department is being downsized ?
Have you been given a promotion with a position of lesser responsibility?
Have you been in the bad books of your mentor / superior / supervisor ?
You don’t have friends in office
You have not got any encouraging words from your manager during the performance appraisal process
Your company has been indicating reorganize its strategy and promoting outsourcing
You have been given projects with a strict time line and is impossible to achieve
Your subordinate gets a mail for what you are responsible for!

If most of the questions are moving towards the negative front, I suggest you start looking at alternate options.
